The
Mothers' Union is an organisation to which 3 million Christians in 71 countries
belong. Our lives and our experience of the Mothers' Union may differ widely
depending on where we are, but we are joined together by our shared belief
in the importance of the family in God's world. The Mothers' Union is active
in supporting family life in many ways all we do is underpinned by our
distinctive spirituality.
Our values have altered little since we began, but the ways we carry out our beliefs have developed with the changes in society. What we stand for is expressed in our Aim and objects which anyone considering membership of the Mothers' Union should understand. The Aim of the Mothers Union is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.
The Mothers' Union is involved in most aspects of parenting, giving support and promoting conditions to provide a stable family life on a world wide basis.
At the heart of the Mothers' Union is prayer. Quiet days and retreats are organised and helpful literature is published. Members throughout the world maintain a continuous wave of Prayer. A few days in March are allocated to the Chester diocese for their link in the chain. The Indoor Members Prayer Circle give prayer support to others who are housebound or restricted for any reason.
Problems of modern life dominate the thinking in this department. New legislation affecting family life is studied and representation is made to MP's. Members run crèches in prisons, both for the prisoners' babies and for visiting children.
Families under stress are given a break, usually in a caravan at the seaside. A week together away from the normal environment can do wonders for relationships and in enabling a family to cope with their problems.
In many countries the Mothers' Union supports a worker whose function is to give practical support to mothers. Mothers' Union membership is growing rapidly abroad and the aim is to make each diocese self-supporting in time. Financial help where there is natural disaster both home and abroad.
Members comment to the regulators about all forms of media output, especially where children are recipients. Leaflets and books are published covering many aspects of family life. Book stalls at special events stock books for all ages and greeting cards for all occasions. Home and Family is a lively, colourful and informative magazine which is published quarterly for members and friends worldwide.
