THE HISTORY OF 4TH HYDE (St Georges) SCOUT GROUP

The group was first founded in May 1927 and the meetings were held in the 'Old School.'
Eventually, authorities allowed the group to move to a basement, officially known as the 'Dug Out.'
4th Hyde continued to run even through the war years, carrying out the main intention of the movement, encouraging the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people.

In the 1950's, the present group H.Q. was built by the enthusiasm of the committee and parents of the children.
We were the first group to open a Beaver Scout colony, to welcome girls into all sections and to appoint a female scout leader. In recent years, the group was forced into closure due to circumstances beyond its control. Many months passed. Finally, the group reached a time where it could once again open its doors to the young people of Hyde.  Hours were spent in refurbishing the H.Q. to a suitable standard to cater for the children’s every need. New secure boundaries were put in situ, and new footpaths and driveways were laid.

In May 2006, we finally reopened our Beaver Colony, welcoming eight new members. The colony has continued since, and now, almost 12 months on we are ready to open our Cub scout section. All our leaders and executive committee members are dedicated to the growth and the continued improvement of the group. Our leaders are all voluntary and give up hours of their free time to ensure 4th Hyde continues to flourish. These people are proud to be members of one of the oldest Scout Groups in the district.
